This guide presumes you are a competent Windows 95 user. The software is basically like windows sound
recorder but with advanced features such as;
* Very long recording times ( Windows Sound recorder only records for 60 seconds ) we can keep
recording until the hard disk is full.
* High capacity recording, by using audio compression codecs.
* Voice Activated Recording.
* Time activated Recording.
* Parallel port activated recording ( for connecting foot switches or external triggering devices. )
* Time and date stamped recordings.
* Each audio file can have a text note built in to it.
* Easy to use user interface.
* Task bar Flashing Icon for showing recording status.
* Keyboard shortcuts ( F5/F6 start stop. )
* Audio data can be accessed and stored over LAN/WAN/Modem.
To install you will need a installation disk. Run a:/setup.exe. You can do a default install or custom install.
For custom install we recommend you select auto detect even if you know what soundcard you have. The
next screen is the compression menu, for telephone recording there is no point in choosing more than 8000
samples per second as phones cannot generate audio above 3.4khz and 8000 records upto 4khz. For
phone use you can choose ADPCM to get the best quality/disk space as it records at 16 bit resolution.
GSM610/MSN codecs produce smaller files of lesser quality. For voice microphones you could choose
11025 sps to record upto 5.5hkz, again ADPCM would be a practical choice. For music you would probably
use 22050/44100sps depending on quality needed. The next screen is auto mode we will go through each
option
* Option 1: VOX mode ( crystal soundcards do not work on VOX mode )
Voice activated recording. Choose whether your audio input is connect to line or microphone input, the
trigger level is between 0 (silent ) and 32767 ( full input ) you will need to change this by trial and error (
when running the recording software displays a sampling value every 1/2second ) The Hi sample count is the
number of samples above the trigger level you wish to wait for before starting recording i.e.
Example 1:You have a microphone and set the trigger level to 2000... Some one enters a room and they
walk around (the background noise and them walking around floats around 1500) .... they start to talk ( the
audio level now goes to 4000 ).. the recording starts...
Example 2: You have a phone, on hook the audio level may be 1000, off hook it jumps upto 3000...
Therefore you set the trigger level to 2000.
You can change the VOX level when using the recording software
* Option 2: Timer Mode
Choose whether your audio input is connect to line or microphone input. Then enter a daily start and stop
time and you can also enter the maximum length of files you want ( enter 0 for one long continuous file)
Example 1: You record when the office is in use 9am-5pm enter 09:00 and 17:00 ( you do not need to enter
the seconds)... You want one long file so enter 0 in the file length option
Example 2: You want to record a location in the afternoon with microphones but want access to the audio
every 1/2 hour. So enter 12:00 and 20:00 and 30 as the file length... This means the location will be recorded
from 12pm to 8pm and the files will be created ( or closed ) every 1/2hour... If you have a modem link you
can dial up every 1/2 hour and get the latest recording. If you had entered 0 as file length a 8hour file would
be made but you couldn't access it till 8pm.
N.B. All windows audio files are built up and cannot be accessed until the recording stops
* Option 3:Telephone ( Parallel port triggering ) mode
This mode works with the telephone off-hook detector unit, and can also be used with other external
triggering devices. This mode monitors the parallel port for a signal to tell the software to record. The
parallel port is sampled every 0.5seconds. The software can start recording after one trigger or wait till the
start signal has been present for a period of time. Likewise the stop recording can be instant or there can be
a delay until the signal is not present for a preset length of time
* Option 4: Manual mode
This mode waits for the user to click start/stop recording or use F5/F6.
The Advanced Options menu. The first parameter sets the gain on the audio input from 0-255 (127 being
medium gain . The next parameter is the delay between rereading the set-up file ( you may remotely or
locally change the set-up, and the program can respond to these changes while operating. )
The software can be setup to save the data on any drive letter ie c,d,e etc. There are first drive and last
drive parameters. The last drive letter parameter is usually C unless you have multiple hard drives. You can
fill up these drives consecutively until they are all full up and then the software will cleanup the first drive
and record over the oldest files. The next parameter is "minimum free megabytes", if you have a 2GB hard
disk and you want to record until there is only 100MB free space left enter "100", the software only fill the
disk up until there is 100MB free it will then delete the oldest files. Once the disk has filled up the software
will free up space for new files the next parameter decide on how much free space will be made.
The software includes buffering which means you get a few seconds of audio at the
beginning of the file before recording was triggered.
Example 1:
First drive letter C
Last Drive letter D
Minimum free MB 100
Delete till MB 1200
The following will happen. the recorder will start on drive C and record till there is 100MB on drive C then
move on to drive D. Once Drive D is filled until there is only 100MB free it will clean up drive C until there
is 1200MB free. Then it will start to record until drive C fills up, after that happens drive D will be cleaned
up until there is 1200MB free there and so on...
workstation ID parameter
Each recorder codes its audio files with a prefix you can change that prefix to represent something such as a
phone extension this is the workstation ID parameter.
Each channel can have a name you can alter
Channel Represents
C0 Line Stereo
C1 Microphone
C2 Line Left
C3 Line Right
N.B. Sometimes the auto-detect may not work with non-approved soundcards.
We have tested the following most common soundcards with our demonstration software
SoundBlaster Original / awe32 /16 /awe64
ess type (usually 1868/1688/1869)
opti chipset
Yamaha OPL3 chipset
Crystal chipset (they are unable to VOX activate)
For other types auto-detect usually works, though you may need to set up manually which is a easy
procedure. Your soundcard information can be found using control panel by clicking the system icon then
selecting Device Manager, then double clicking Sound, Video and game controllers. If you find the program
will not record then you can easily install your card by doing the following.
Run the recording software (ChanlRec.exe) click on advanced box then click the "Get Audio Info" button.
These Values need to be transferred to the softwares configuration file c:\windows\chanlrec.ini you can edit
this file using notepad and change the values according to your soundcard ; under the [Soundcard] settings
i.e. You will see a section as below

These above are the values for our OPL3 soundcard using microphone VOX.
The "Get Audio Info" button returns the following text;

These values need to match up in the ini (c:\windows\chanlrec.ini ) file. This is usually done by the setup
program
For multiple installation we use a defualt.ini file on the installation disc, this is copied on to workstations
and will setup the system the same every time ie Vox mode and correct vox levels etc...
